Farm Considerations Before Planting

Planting trees will change the light, rainfall, and temperature of the surrounding area. This may be beneficial to some species, but could be detrimental to others. This includes taonga species such as native birds, plants, animals, or fish of special cultural significance and importance to Māori.

Learn from the past

What was the original land cover? How was it used? What can you learn from how the land was used historically?

Consider developing a relationship with your local hapū and finding out more about the cultural history of your land. Inquire at your local council about historical land use information.

Look to the future

Is my goal to return the land to a past state, or create a new future? How will trees affect taonga and other native species? How can I protect significant cultural or natural areas on my farm?
